Halloween is such an exciting time for kids and a busy one for their feet! Between costumes, candy, and all the walking from house to house, it’s easy to forget how important proper footwear is. At Footprint, we want to make sure your little ghosts and goblins enjoy a fun (and blister-free) night of trick-or-treating.
1. Choose Comfort Over Costume
While costume shoes may look cute, they’re often not designed for walking. Avoid high heels, thin soles, or shoes that are too big or too small. Instead, go with a supportive pair of runners or comfortable walking shoes that your child has already worn in. This helps prevent blisters, sore arches, and trips or falls.
2. Dress for the Weather
Halloween in Canada can be unpredictable; sometimes mild, sometimes chilly and wet. Make sure your child wears warm socks (preferably moisture-wicking ones) to keep their feet dry and warm. If it’s damp out, waterproof shoes or boots are a smart choice to avoid cold, soggy feet.
3. Watch for Tripping Hazards
Long costumes, loose laces, and uneven sidewalks can all lead to stumbles. Choose costumes that allow for easy movement and make sure laces are tied securely. Reflective tape or glow sticks can also help keep your little one visible while walking in the dark.
4. Give Feet a Break
If you’re covering a large neighbourhood, take short breaks along the way to let your child rest their feet. Sore or tired feet can lead to awkward walking patterns and strain on the ankles and arches.
5. Check Feet After the Fun
When you get home, give those feet a quick once-over. Check for any rubbing, blisters, or irritation especially if your child wore new shoes. A warm soak and a cozy pair of socks are the perfect way to end the night.
A quick reminder: if your child complains of foot pain that lasts longer than a few days, it may be a sign of a structural issue or growing concern. Our Chiropodists can assess, treat, and help prevent future problems so your child stays comfortable and active all year long.
Have a safe and happy Halloween from all of us at Footprint!!!
